Magazine Subscriptions

Magazines are a really great and inexpensive gift to give people for the Holidays.

In this past Sunday's paper there was an insert in one of the coupon sets for a magazine subscription for Good Housekeeping and Redbook. The prices were:

$10.00 for 12 issues of Good Housekeeping (usually $2.50 per issue)
+$2.00 more for 12 issues of Redbook (usually $3.50 per issue)
So, $12.00 for 24 magazines!!!

I have a couple of extra offer pages if anyone wants them. The offer is good thru 1/31/09 is usually the cheapest place to order magazines, but for a website that does all of the comparison shopping for you use this one:

A few I found through this site:
Family Circle Magazine $11.97 for 15 issues (68% savings)
Woman's Day $9.99 for 17 issues (78% savings)
Sports Illustrated $20.00 for 28 issues (82% savings)

If anyone gets a magazine subscription from me this year,'ll know where I got it from!

New Walgreens $5 off $20 Coupon for October 24th & 25th

Not to be used with the purchase of perscriptions, alcohol, gift cards etc.

Also, from Connie's blog:

Walgreens has Pert Plus on sale for $3.49 this week!

In their October Easy Saver Catalog (the little catalog in the front of the store), there's a $2.50 coupon on page 10.

Also, click HERE for more $1.00 printable coupons!

Combine the $2.50 Q (?) with a $1.00 Q to get free shampoo!

Free coupon class

My neighbor, Kolina is hosting a free coupon class for beginners. She is not affiliated with any specific coupon clubs, and isn't selling anything, rather is just more willing and able to help people learn how to save money and get great deals in these tough financial times. If you would like to attend and need to know where she lives or have questions, please email her @ She has been using coupons for a couple of years now, and actually helped get me into it. (it's like a ripple effect when you see how many people you can help!)

When: Saturday, November 8th
Time: 10:00 am
Where: Kolina's house in Queen Creek
What: Learn about how to:
  • Cut your grocery bill in at least half
  • Maximize the benefits of using coupons
  • Get stuff for FREE
  • Work on building your food storage/year supply
  • Utilize FREE resources
  • Organizing coupons

The workshop is FREE. It is geared towards beginners, but anyone is welcome to attend. The workshop will focus on FREE services and resources available to coupon users.

There will be door prizes, and FREEBIES if you bring a friend.

Again, please e-mail her at if you plan on attending and for directions to her home.

She has also been working on her own "Best Price List, Version 1" which features the items we frequently get on sale with coupons so you know what the best prices are. (Kind of like creating your own "never pay more than" list that I mentioned before. You can always see what she has and add your own frequently purchased items to it for personal use!

Kolina also has a bargain blog dedicated to finding deals and helping others get a year supply. To visit her blog, click here.

Good deal on Halloween Candy

This Week CVS has their Mars brand bags of candy on sale for 2/$3. There was a coupon in last Sunday's Red Plum insert, as well as in a past insert for $1 off 2 bags. So after coupons the price is $1/bag! It seems like every year several stores put the bags of candy on sale for 2/$3 closer to Halloween, so if you miss this one you'll most likely be able to catch another sale later on.

Another coupon to use at Fry's $5 off $25

Whole Foods is on the list of stores that Fry's will accept coupons from until 10/28. Their website has a coupon online that is good for $5/$25 purchase.

Albertson's might also accept this coupon, but YMMV (Your mileage may vary) on the cashier you get.

LINK TO COUPON The coupon is good today through 10/22!

Food Storage Downloads

My new hero really is this lady that runs the My Food Storage Deals blog and website. Anyone that makes it look easy is my hero.

Click HERE to see where she has a link on her website for free PDF files (That's right, you can save them, email them to friends, print them off etc!) of the following:

  • Food Storage Inventory-Keep a running total of all the most commonly used foods in your food storage and pantry. This sheet also helps you know which foods are part of which food storage categories, and how much you need of each item for a year supply.
  • Meal Planning Tips and a Cooking Calendar-Want to save money on your grocery bill each month? Start planning your meals. Here is a great form to use when planning your grocery list and some easy tips to save you money.
  • Food Storage outline-Where should you begin? What is the best way to get your families year supply of food? Here are some of the most common questions and answers on how to get started.
  • Food Storage Recipies-When obtaining a year supply of food it is important to have foods that will be able to make complete meals for your family. Here are a few meals and easy recipes that will help you know which “staple” items to add to your food storage.
  • One Year Supply Guide-Many people feel obtaining a year supply of food is too overwhelming. This One Year Supply Guide will help you know how much you need of each food storage item, tell you the shelf life of each item, and give you other good information to help you begin your food storage shopping.
  • 72-Hour Kits-How do you put a 72 hour kit together? What should be in your kit?
  • Water Storage Information-Find out the best and safest way to store water, filter water, etc.
  • 2 different personal spending plans-Here are two personal spending worksheets to help plan and budget your monthly expenses. These worksheets will help you track and figure out your monthly expenditures. Part of being self reliant is having your families finances in order, as well as having a year supply of food.

See why she is my hero? This is the best inventory worksheet I have seen yet.

And here is a downloadable spreadsheet for planning a 3 month supply courtesy of

If Ye Are Prepared, Ye Shall Not Fear

For some people, bargain shopping is all about using the small budget they have every week to get what their family needs at the lowest prices, no extras. For others, it is not a "necessity", but a frugal way to wisely use what the Lord provides. And for some it is a smart and easy way to do both while gaining items for a year supply a little at a time. For any of our LDS readers, you know exactly what we are talking about when we use words like 72-hour kits, or Year Supply etc. Others, however, might not so let me give some more info to those that might know what the crazy LDS woman with her 5 kids at Costco are doing with their 20 cases of peaches. :)

The leaders of our church have asked that we do the following:

None of this is new, they have been asking that we get food storage (and learn how to use) it for over 60 years. I was reading a post from one of my favorite sites,, an email from one of her family members near the disaster of hurricane Ike and it just really hit home for me that there IS a reason that we are asked to do things, even if the reason might not immediately be in front of us. Plain and simple, "If ye are prepared, ye shall not fear." Wether you are LDS or not, these are smart things for any family to do knowing that we live in hard economic circumstances, there are rumors of wars, natural disasters etc. So I thought I'd share, and just imagine your own kids and family, neighbors etc when you read the email. Ask yourself, am I prepared for something like this? What would I do? Would my children go without ____?

Here is the email she posted:

"Dear Friends: We have a 6'x6' hole in our roof, no electricity or running water, Trees down everywhere. How ever, because we listened to the counsel of our prophet we are prepared. In fact it seems to me that it's only the members of the church who seem to be calm, prepared, and helping one another with trees in roofs, flooding, etc. There is a POD or Point of Distribution in Tomball where we live. There you get water and ice IF you have enough fuel to wait in the 3-hour lines. We don't have to do that because we have 3 full water barrels, 75 juice bottles filled with water, and our pool, which is dirty, but we use it to flush. It is very difficult to get gas. Police guard the stations when fuel is delivered and you might wait half a day to get up to the pump just to have them say, 'Too bad, we are out'. I am grateful that we have a generator. We run it 4 hours a day to keep our fridge and light. I am grateful that we have had fuel for it. You can't even by gas containers as they are rationed. We can only by bread once a week and limite d to 2 loaves at a time. Water is rationed by the case at the grocery store - 3 cases per family. The ATM machines do not have power. For the past 6 months I have stashed small bills away because I have had such a feeling of foreboding. We have cash because of that. LISTEN TO THE SPIRIT. Get cash in small bills because the stores can't make change and credit and debit cards often don't work. I had to pay 5 dollars more for an item because they couldn't make change for me. and . . . PHONES ONLY WORK OCCASIONALY. Believe it or not...I have not had a bath in 4 days, Today was the first day I got to wash my hair with pool water. I haven't fixed my hair in a week!!! It just doesn't matter anymore. We cannot do laundry because we don't have water. So, we wear our clothes until they are literally disgusting. When we do finally get water we will have to boil it since it is contaminated.I am grateful for my parents. When we got low on generator fuel they drove 45 minutes to help us. They filled up their cans and brought us 10 gallons of fuel, which kept us going until this morning at 6:oo, am when we finally found some gas. A prepared Family and a loving extended family is the key to survival and making it through right now. I know that my parents would drive to the end of the earth to help me and it's nice knowing they are there. I know that I would do the same for my children. I want all of you to know that I have such a testimony of following the counsel of our living prophet. There really is safety and peace in your heart if you are prepared. Please get your generators, 5 gas cans full of gas, canned goods, baby items, baby wipes to bathe, and all the water you can store...even if you have to trip on it in your home. Have your lanterns, crank flashlights, tarps, rope, etc. ready to go because you never know when it will be your turn to endure the test. It's overwhelming, but it's going to be ok eventually. I have a home, I have food, and I have water, because I listened to the counsel of the prophet. Please make sure you do the same. It's time to have your life in order. Tomorrow may be too late. "

Fall Cleaning Buy 1 Get 1 Free (equal or lesser value, mix and match)How good this deal is will depend a lot on how the Safeway system is set up and how nit-picky your cashier is. IF both items ring up at full price and the free one is taken off at the end (and you have a nice cashier) you should be able to use a coupon on each item (even the free one). If the first item rings up at full price and the second rings up at zero, you will only be able to use one coupon for the 2 items.

Here are a few deals with coupons, final price assumes you use 2 coupons.

Fresh & Easy $6/$30 Online coupon to use at Fry's

A Fry's cashier told me this morning that they are accepting this online coupon from Fresh & Easy. It is for $6 off $30.

Eight shopping tricks

1. Make a list, check it twice
No, seriously. Before even looking at the grocery ads for the week, I make a list of items that my family immediately NEEDS for the next week or so. (bread, milk, eggs etc) I also have a separate list of items that I have in mind for our 3, 6 or 12 month supply. Keeping my priorities in mind from the beginning always helps when I start looking at the ads and making my grocery list. Even then, after I have made my grocery list for items that are on sale and/or I have a coupon for, I will go over it again doing a "mental total" to determine if everything is really A)necessary and B)a good deal. Just because you have a coupon, and just because it is on sale, that doesn't mean it will even compare to a certain store brand's "red tag" price.

2. Shop aloneand after eating
One thing I have learned to do in order to avoid impulse buying: Do your shopping after a light snack or meal and leave the kids at home. (But I'm so good at impulse buying, right?) If you aren't hungry, those Twinkies will be much easier to pass up. And, if you have ever shopped with children, you know that all they want to do is grab any goody within reach of their eye level. If you're not hungry and you can concentrate on getting in and out of the store without having to play goalie between your cart and kids then you will have more time and patience to comparison shop. So when possible, leave the kids at home while you are well fed, list in hand, ready to scan the aisles for what you need as well as special deals.

3. Understand how stores work
A basic understanding of merchandising can help you avoid overspending.

• Walk quickly toward the items ON YOUR LIST that you came to buy and avoid distractions along the way. I have found myself wandering down isles aimlessly several times. It's a trap! I think everyone has noticed that stores place the necessary items such as diapers and milk at the back of the store. They basically force you to walk past a million displays of beautifully stacked items just to tempt you over and over again. Why? Because they know that unless you are focused, you will give in. (It's so true and you know it!)
• Products are displayed at the ends of the aisles in order to catch your eye. Think carefully about whether what you see there is really necessary — or a bargain — before you toss it in the cart. Many "featured" items on the end caps are not bargains at all.
• As you persue the aisles, bend over to check the prices on the bottom shelves and compare them to the cost of the items at eye level.
• Avoid buying the items displayed by the register. The magazines at the checkout stand cost much more per issue than they would if you had a subscription, and cookies in little packages cost more than a from a box. Almost everything near the register is there to inspire you to buy on impulse, not to save you money.
Tip: Make fewer trips to the store and you'll find yourself with fewer chances to pick up a few extras you don't really need.

4. Don't be a brand snob- Buy house brands or generics
The less-costly house brands are often so similar to national brands that you wouldn't be able to tell them apart without the packaging. Read labels to compare nutritional value and you'll quickly see how little difference (if any) there is. Also, keep in mind that meat and dairy products all have to meet government standards, so store brands should be just as wholesome and nutritious as national brands. You would be surprised how many name brand and house brand items are actually packaged in the same warehouses, just put in different packaging. And once again, coupon shopping is great, but a lot of times items are still more expensive when they are on sale and you have a coupon than the house brands. This doesn't always apply, there are good promos and deals that come around. But use this as a general rule.
I might just be crazy, but I have spent time at Wal-Mart with a notebook and a pen writing down the price of their Great Value brand items and other items that I frequently buy there, just so that I know when things go on sale somewhere else if it is still a good deal or not. (Items like baking supplies, pasta, sauce, diapers, trash bags, lunch meats, pudding etc) I call it my "Never pay more than list". It might take a while to come up with your list. If an item is on sale for cheaper than Wal-Mart (without coupons, I can price match it at Wal-Mart, if not- I can always stick with their store brand if I need it bad enough.) (I have found their store brand to be be cheaper than other store brands at regular price) Yes, you give up "customer service" when you shop at Wal-mart, but that's not what I was going there for in the first place!

5. Check the unit price
As you cruise down the aisles comparing products, take note of the unit price that appears on the store shelf just below or above the product. The unit price tells you what the product costs per ounce or some other consistent unit of measurement. Whether the package is tall, short, or squat, you'll know in an instant whether it costs more or less than other sizes of the same food. Don't be fooled by packaging — compare per-unit prices, and buy the item that offers more for less instead of the one that looks like more for less.

6. Use savings cards and coupons
Check your supermarket's weekly flyer or ads for coupons on items you buy regularly — but also take advantage of your store's savings card. Albertsons is the only grocery store that I know of at this time that doesn't require a savings card. Fry's has their VIP card etc. It is silly NOT to have one of these savings cards for every grocery store. When you register for them, you give them your phone # as well. Instead of keeping my cards on me, I either use the little cards they give you to put on your key ring OR just type in my phone # (with area code) at the beginning of my purchase. Keep your clipped coupons organized, perhaps separated according to grocery aisle or section. I prefer the binder method, separated by category, but whether you choose to hold them in envelopes, in a zip-top bag, with paper clips, or in a specially designed accordion file, store them in your purse or car so they're with you whenever you shop. It's annoying to come home from food shopping and find the coupon you wanted on the counter — on your store's triple coupon day. For more information on beginning coupon shopping, visit or
Tip: If a sale item doesn't appear on the shelves, ask for a rain check so you can get it for the reduced price when it's back in stock.

7. Buy in bulk
Buying in bulk is a no-brainer if you're feeding a big family or the whole preschool. But you can still benefit from these discounts if yours is a smaller family or you have limited storage space. Here are some ideas for making the most of oversize buys:
• As always, arrive at your bulk-shopping store with a list. I always find things at Costco that I just don't need, but can't pass up because I wandered from my list!
• Buy mostly nonperishable items that you know for sure you'll use eventually — for example, paper products, cleaning supplies, baby wipes, juice boxes, and canned goods.
• If you do purchase perishables, separate large packages into smaller ones as soon as you get home. Divide chicken and steaks, for example, into daily portions and freeze for later use.
• Split the purchases and the bill with another family. Again, a list is a must — agree ahead of time on what you'll buy. If you trade off trips to the store, both families also save time.

8. Buy from the source, or join a co-op
Get produce from a local farmer's market and you can avoid the store markup on fresh vegetables and fruit. You can even buy organic items at bargain prices. Some farmer's markets carry locally produced meat and dairy products, locally caught fish, and a variety of prepared sauces, preserves, and condiments made by local food artisans. I use BountifulBaskets produce co-op every other week for my produce and my husband and I also recently planted a garden. Produce co-ops use the exact same items used in grocery stores and local health food stores, they are just the extras not the rejects. Also, gardening is a very fun way to get the family involved in healthy eating habits and saving $$$ on your food bill.

Any other great tips?

Johnson's Buddy Bars

A few weeks ago we got coupons for $3 off 3 Johnson's Baby Products. (does not specify or picture all products) The Johnson's Buddy Bars are still .97 at most Fry's. The Frys in QC on Hunt/Bella Vista have them for under $1.00 still. (Some stores have raised the price to $1.20.)
Using 3 coupons at a time, (K205) you can get 9 bars of soap for .39c (tax).

At Frys, they spit out a catalina for $3 off 3 for me last week as well.

If you don't get the paper, click HERE to print the coupon (2 times per computer). Save this link because every month or so it will let you print them again!

Here is a GREAT one...CLICK HERE.. $2/2 products. Yes you can use them on any product listed, but why not use it on 4 bars for FREE (using 2 coupons!)

Also a note, WalMart has these bars for under $1.00 as well!

Shutterfly Calendar Deal:

The past few years I have digitally scrapbooked calendars for my parents and in-laws. Anyone who has done this before will tell you it's a great (and relatively inexpensive) way to give something very useful and very personal for loved ones. If you don't have the time or aren't feeling creative enough, I highly reccomend ordering one online from a photo site like Shutterfly.

And now through October 29th when you buy 1 calendar, you get 50% off additional calendars.
If you've already signed up with them half your work is done. If you haven't, now's the time! You'll get 50 free 4x6 prints and Free Standard Shipping on your first order when you join Shutterfly.

I got a flier in the mail today also saying that you can also get $10 off your purchase of $50.00 or more by using promo code: HOLIDAY

This is one project I would suggest starting on earlier rather than later. The lead time for personalized products is longer than photo prints and you of course have to consider the time it will take you to decide on a layout and photos!

When you sign up with them, they do often email you about special promos that they are having. They are great! I also love MyPublisher, but this post isn't about them!
Thanks, BeCentsAble! for some of this info

Kid's Coupon Books @McDonalds

Mmmm. McDonalds. Who doesn't love McDonald's?

The kids coupon books are back again! They are priced from $1 to $1.50 each and are loaded with coupons for FREE stuff like apple dippers, cookies, ice cream cones, fries and/or a small drink. This time might include hamburgers too. If you live near a McD's and have kids (and of course, go there often) they are worth the investment! Makes a great gift too. For use between Oct 31 and Dec 31, 2008. Not all McD's advertise these, but when I asked, they had them.

Thanks, Megan
